Sunday 1st February

Very very cold, a cutting north wind. I had a brief wander around Amble pier and checked out the harbour this morning. Difficult conditions for observing.
Sea watching from Birling was a little more productive, Little Auks were moving and two flew quite close to the shore, battling northwards into the wind.
A superb male Velvet Scoter was feeding just in the breakers, lovely to watch through the scope..

January

January is over, the patch has been really interesting this month, 75 species recorded by the end of the month, no particular highlights but a good start to the year with Red Breasted Merganser, Goldeneye, Kingfisher, Purple Sandpiper and Mediterranean Gull recorded.
