Summertime Blues

I headed out this morning, to Low Newton and Long Nanny, with Stewart. We had ideas about wildflowers and butterflies.
It was a cool morning with 80% cloud cover, heavy showers and a brisk enough breeze to make summer wandering a little uncomfortable at times.

Low Newton
We decided to check out the Reserve first. The dunes and scrub were full of noisy family parties of birds. Whitethroat, Blue Tit, Reed Bunting, Sedge Warbler, Stonechat, Chiff Chaff, Meadow Pipit all seen.

Whitethroat
The Reserve itself was quiet. A single Little Gull on the flooded fields was nice though.

We did pause to photograph two newly fledged Swallows, they were sat out on a wooden gate and adult birds were dropping in regularily to feed them. They allowed close approach, my photographs were not that good but it was really nice just to watch them.

Swallows
Strolling out to Long Nanny it started to rain, not that heavy but cold and wet enough to make me think it should be warm and sunny. Wild flowers wer really nice despite the weather, Bloody Cranesbill, Rest Harrow, Orchids, Eyebright, Wild Thyme, Bedstraw and many more. We headed to the Tern wardens hut, just to get some shelter from the rain, we skulked behind the hut untill the shower passed.

The return walk was much more pleasant, a little sunlight broke through the cloud and butterflies were on the wing, Meadow Brown, Ringlet and Common Blue.
